When Two Become One
We’re dropping off like flies – getting married that is. After graduating college and getting a job, I guess the only thing left to do to achieve adulthood is tie the knot. In the last year, I’ve married off three friends, got one in the wings and I’m more than certain there will be another engaged before the year ends. The transition from college kid to adult is bizarre. We have jobs and are finally able to afford something better than Natural Ice and Boone’s wine, but now we have car payments, rent and credit card bills to stay on top of.
For icing on the cake, we have the journey into married life. And, every new couple gets loads of cards wishing them a loving marriage. But, where are all the cards wishing them financial success? Because that’s surely a shoo-in for a long-lasting marriage. Unfortunately, nobody is at the end of the receiving line saying, “Congratulations! Will you be merging your bank accounts before or after the honeymoon?”
Having the “money” talk is definitely a must-do for any couple. If you can’t come to terms with each other, there’s certainly no shame in bringing in a third party (attorney). Finances are always going to be a topic of conversation in a relationship - buying a home, planning vacations, starting a business, preparing for retirement, dealing with structured settlement annuities or inheritences, etc…. So, there’s no reason not to have the best plan possible.
