Using Resources Wisely Series Part 11 Zen and Understanding the Nature of Gasoline

Zen and Understanding the Nature of Gasoline

I have been having fun seeing how much mileage I can get out of each tank of gasoline.  The easiest and least expensive tips I discovered are: Park in the shade and use a sun visor on the front windshield.  There is a more important reason for doing both of these other than for comfort or keeping the car cooler.  It is to keep the gas tank cooler.  Gas loves to expand.   According to Snopes’ Gas Pumping Tip When it gets warmer gasoline expands so if your are filling up in the afternoon or evening, what should be a gallon is not exactly a gallon. Well why didn’t anyone tell me about this before!

I suppose this is why I get less gas mileage in the bottom half of my gas tank.  Since the nature of gas is to expand, once there is less gasoline in my tank, it expands out into the empty space  and evaporates more easily.  So to counteract this I have been filling my tank up when it is at the half way mark.  At first I was thinking what a waste of time. However with the extra gas mileage I am getting I bet I am stopping just as often as I was before.

I was mentioning these tips to my friend and he shared with me a gas saving tip his parent shared with him recently.  When pumping gas into the tank, do it slowly.  Do not pull the handle all the way.  This will keep gas from evaporating during the pumping process.

After finding all these same tips on Gas Pumping Tips from Snopes, (after I figured this out on my own) it occurs to me there may be lots of sources of information  that can save me the trouble of learning everything from scratch. By knowing the right place to get information, unmeasured amounts of time, money and effort can be saved.  (I know Mom! I am finally getting what you have been telling me all these years.)

So now the only question remains is now that I understand the nature of gasoline, does it make me Zen (I mean am I one with the gasoline) or just a better consumer?
